You shake your head. There’s really no point, as far as you’re concerned. Instead of struggling with your weird mouth again, you just grab him by the front of his shirt and teleport back to your house. You’ve done enough walking, now you just want to go home.

Both of you rematerialize on the foyer and when the lavender-colored fog dissipates you let go of him. You kick off your shoes and leave them by the door, then stalk off to the kitchen after a slightly vague ‘follow me’ gesture.

You feel your last flicker of hope fizzle out when Slick shakes his head.

He grabs you by the shirt and everything around you suddenly changes. It’s a surprise, you don’t remember Slick being able to teleport. You can’t really bring yourself to ask about it right now. Maybe later, if you remember.

You follow him into the kitchen, take a good look around as you go. “Nice place you got here,” you remark. You figure Slick must have come into some good money while you were in the dark, because it’s much nicer than the old place you shared as a Crew. You take back that thought and lock it away; thinking about it just makes you sad.

You let him hug you a second time but keep your hands on his shoulders. You’d almost forgotten how short the guy was.
When he asks you about Droog and Boxcars you avert your gaze and your eyes dim a little bit. You don’t really have a good answer for that other than, “G͝ǫn҉e.

==>

You pull back when he says that, making a small noise of disbelief. You’re silent for a good minute until you echo, “Gone?” Immediately you shake your head and grin. You try to pretend it isn’t forced. “Naw, they can’t be! There’s no… no way, Droog and Boxcars wouldn’t… can’t be. They can’t!” You refuse to believe it, you don’t want it to be true. “They’ve gotta be here somewhere! Right? We can still find them!”

Your heart does a fucking barrel roll and you hug him tight about the shoulders, almost digging your claws into them. In the myriad of creative noises you’ve made so far, another makes its appearance when you sigh. It’s a low humming down more than a simple exhalation of breath.

When you pull away you feel a little more like yourself. You study his face, really taking in the details this time, and notice the color difference between his eyebrows and hair and also the difference between his irises. Weird and dumb at the same time.

Ẃh̡ere͘ h̡ave y̵o҉u b͏e̕eń?” Your voice still sounds a little mangled and very far away when you speak, and the usual dual-tones are much more emphasized. “W̕h͘y ͝ar̛e̵ you͠ ҉in͢ ̕D̀all͡as?̧”

==>

You feel that hum tickle right by your ear and it makes you all the more aware that Slick is here, he’s alive and safe and from what you can gather, he has been for a while.

It’s hard to understand what he’s saying, like he’s getting used to a brand new mouth, but you manage to figure out what he’s asking. “Lookin’ for you, of course!” you answer, looking at him for only a second before going in for another hug. Now that you’re finally touching another person again, you can’t say that you want to stop. “And Droog and Boxcars! Are they here, too? Are they okay?” You dare to sound hopeful as you lift your head up enough to let your eyes dart about, searching for any sign of them.

You’re relieved when he recognizes you, but the feeling is short-lived. Some foreign instinct makes you freeze the second he looks at you, the brightness of your eyes increases and you make another completely alien noise. A growl that starts deep in your chest and rattles through your teeth as a very insectoid screech. In the back of your mind you’re almost frantic trying to regain control of yourself before you do something you regret but you don’t know how to function as a member of this species before you know it you’re claws are ready to tear right into him.

Thankfully, the internal struggle you’re currently engaged in makes you hesitate and that pause is all you need to come to your senses. You shake your head and instead of gutting Deuce on the spot you grab him by the shoulders and lean close to examine his face. The glow from your eyes casts him into a pinkish purple light at such a short distance and you squint a little more, making your mouth form words against its will, “Is i͟t ̕r͠eall͢y̵ ̧yo̶u̶?̢?̴”

==>

You stand stock still and let him get a good look at you, because you heard that alien noise he made, and you don’t want to tempt him into doing something without meaning to. You take this chance to get a better look at him, too. The glowing eyes kind of hurt yours to stare at for too long. He looks nothing like you remember, but you know that he’s Spades Slick, and for a fact. There’s no way he’s not.

You’re so excited, you can barely contain yourself. Scratch that, you can’t contain yourself at all. You hug him around the waist, laughter bubbling up inside you and you’re just so damn happy to see him again you could cry. “It’s me, it sure is, all right!! Is it you? Is it really you, Slick? Oh man, oh man, how long’s it been??” It doesn’t really occur to you that you really don’t know, you haven’t a clue how long it’s been. Funny what existing in a place where time doesn’t can do to a fellow.

>CD: TEXAAAS!

You re-materialize on a transportalizer pad somewhere you’ve never been before. There are people everywhere, tall buildings and cars and the regular city noise. You step off the pad and fall into the crowd. You still have no idea where you are and everyone is walking by too quickly for you to stop them and ask.

After your fifth or so try, you decide to just keep walking. You come upon a sign: one big star in a big space, red white and blue…

Gosh, it sure is pretty.

And better yet, it’s got the location written on it. You’re somewhere in Dallas, Texas. It’s even got some maps available, aww! How thoughtful!

It’s after you take one and walk three blocks away that you remember, you can’t read maps.

>CD: Get lost.

>SF: Walk

You’ve only been out for a little while, but already the sun is rising and the city is coming to life around you. You’re doing well to stay out of sight. Being a winged individual in a chitinous shell is weird enough to see, and you’re not sure you want to find out how people react to your current form.

>CD: Shiver.

You have no idea what that sound was, but you know for a fact that you heard your name and it sent chills down your spine, made you freeze in your tracks. Did that come from behind you? You think so.

>CD: Pester literally everyone you see.

That’s exactly what you do. At first, nobody really wants to stop and chat with you and are actually kind of rude about it, but eventually they start talking. Maybe it’s because you sound desperate, maybe it’s because you threatened to blow their houses to bits if they didn’t tell you what you wanted to know. You’ll never tell.

>CD: Begin your search.

One thing is for certain: you can’t stay here. It’s dark and it’s lonely, and you’ve had enough of that. You backtrack to your old room, just as untouched and dusty as the rest of the place, track down some clothes because if there’s one thing you remember, it’s that going around naked is pretty well frowned upon.

You’re swimming in darkness. You have been for a long time now. You’re not sure how long, all you know is that you stopped keeping track a long time ago. You get the feeling that here, time doesn’t matter much anyway.
